BWS vs Liquorland: Australia’s Neighbourhood Bottle Shops
BWS and Liquorland are the two bottle shop chains most Australians pass on the way home. BWS (Beer Wine Spirits) belongs to Endeavour Group and has more than 1,400 stores, many of them next to a Woolworths supermarket. Liquorland is the bottle shop brand of Coles Liquor and is usually found next to a Coles. Both sell beer, cider, premixed drinks, wine and spirits, and both run regular specials and member prices.
Specials and pricing
Both chains publish weekly promotions with price drops, “any two” multi-buys and mixed six or dozen wine discounts. Popular brands of beer and premix are often discounted at both stores in the same week, sometimes at slightly different prices, so a quick comparison before you buy a carton can save a few dollars.
Everyday Rewards vs Flybuys
The biggest practical difference is the loyalty program. BWS is linked with Everyday Rewards, so Woolworths shoppers can unlock member prices and earn points. Liquorland is linked with Flybuys, so Coles shoppers can do the same there. If you already collect one program, that can make the decision for you.
Store formats
BWS focuses on small neighbourhood stores and drive-thrus, with its sister brand Dan Murphy’s covering big-box shopping. Coles Liquor has brought its brands together under the Liquorland name, including big-box Liquorland Warehouse stores and premium Liquorland Cellars ranges for fine wine and spirits.
The Verdict
Choose the chain that matches your supermarket and loyalty program, and compare both when you are buying in bulk. Check the BWS catalogue and the Liquorland catalogue, and for large shops see Dan Murphy’s vs BWS.
